One of the judges injured by the attack on the Council of State last Wednesday, Ayfer Ozdemir, has been released from the Hacettepe Hospital in Ankara, where she was being treated for bullet wounds to her wrist.

Speaking to reporters on her exit from the hospital, Ozdemir said "Let the enemies of the republic never speak as though I am one of them. The bullets they shot at me didn't kill me, but their words will." Ozdemir's reference was to the fact that emerged following the attack, which was reportedly motivated by the controversial "turban" decision made earlier this year by the court, that she had used her vote to oppose the decision. Lawyer Alparslan Aslan, responsible for the attack, said yesterday that he wanted to "apologize" for aiming at her with his bullets.

Ozdemir also congratulated Turkish people for their vociferous demonstrations on May 18 in the capital following news of Judge Mustafa Ozbilgin's murder. Said Ozdemir "The most wonderful, honorable and meaningful things which can be said now have already been said by the secular Turkish people on May 18. I am very proud of them, and love them very much."
