ISTANBUL - The Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency has reported that the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, which visited Istanbul at the end of April, found the progress made satisfactory as the time approaches for Istanbul to be a European culture capital.

The European agency’s written statement noted that the committee, which investigated the latest cultural heritage and urban projects, was pleased with the restoration, building survey, renovation and other rehabilitation projects that were ongoing in certain places.

Taking a positive note from UNESCO’s committee, the agency stated that it organized a meeting with the committee members and that during the meeting the agency gave information on Istanbul’s management plan, territorial water, Süleymaniye renewal project, Yenikapı Thedosius Port-Marmaray Main Transfer Project, Sur-i Sultani Master Plan Studies, Topkapı Palace restoration project and Sirkeci Hocapaşa pedestrian project.

The three-person committee was led by UNESCO World Heritage Center member David Michelmore. The UNESCO committee’s first visit was to Molla Zeyrek Mosque, where they gathered information about the ongoing work and they stopped at the historic wooden Zeyrek Houses, most of which are being restored. The Zeyrek neighborhood in Fatih district took its name from the historic mosque.

The complete report on Istanbul will be presented and investigated at the UNESCO commission meeting in the city of Sevilla, Spain.
