''Naftogaz can only guarantee uninterrupted transit (of gas) to European consumers as long as it does not threaten Ukraines energy security," the statement said.
However Russia's gas monopoly warned the European Commission that it would cut supplies to Ukraine by 50 percent in a debt war but underlined the EU would not be hit, an EU official said Tuesday.
"Gazprom told us of their intention to cut supplies to Ukraine by another 25 percent ... this will bring the total to around 50 percent," a commission spokesman said. "They reassured us that gas supplies to the EU will not be affected," the spokesman added.
Gazprom already cut supplies by 25 percent and decided "to cut deliveries by another 25 percent" at 1700 GMT Tuesday, company spokesman Sergei Kupriyanov said on state television.
