New York - The Manhattan Chamber of Commerce chooses Turkey as its VIP Partner Country for 2009. The project, conducted in partnership with the Turkish American Chamber of Commerce and Industry, aims to better promote Turkey as a reliable business partner

In partnership with the Turkish American Chamber of Commerce and Industry, or TACCI, the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, or MCC, has identified Turkey as its "VIP Partner Country" for 2009 under its Country Partner Program.

The yearlong program is designed to establish sustainable peer-to-peer industry networks between American and Turkish businesses to strengthen, promote and develop bilateral trade between Turkish business, MCC members and partners.

With this strategic partnership the MCC will serve as a clearinghouse of information and contacts for Turkish companies. The MCC’s close relations with key American government agencies, trade associations, private industry, media and academic circles would play a crucial role in providing the professional American audience Turkish partners seek.

An ally in economy

"We want the United States to recognize Turkey not only as a military ally but also as an ally in the economic realm. We believe the world has some familiarity with Turkey’s political condition, however, what we want to do is to provide a better presentation of Turkey’s economy, as well as its business world," TACCI President Sevil Özışık told Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review.

As part of a yearlong program, conferences particularly focused on renewable energy, organic food, health care and eco-friendly construction will be held throughout next year. Depending on the discussion topics, key actors from related industries operating in New York City, along with the Turkish business community, and possibly government officials, will participate in these conferences.

These sectors have been chosen based on the new economic policies of America designed as part of attempts to overcome the economic crisis.

The partnership is a great opportunity for both Turkish and American investors, she said. Turkey is a very attractive country which is located in a region which has around 1.4 billion customers, said Alev Günay, U.S. representative of Investment Support and Promotion Agency of Turkey, or ISPAT, which helps foreign investors set up operations in Turkey.

The MCC aims to create a business opportunity for both Turkish and American companies, said MCC Global Business Director Ally A. C. Gündüz. "Turkey is among the top ten emerging markets and needs more exposure in the U.S. market," she said.

"I have grown up here as a Turk and what I have been observing is that Turkey is an underestimated country. This really bothers me because the only reason behind this is that we do not have enough PR to promote the opportunities within Turkey," said Gündüz, who is hoping that this new partnership will help change things a little.
