ANKARA - Gendarmarie forces have seized 3.5 metric tons (3.9 U.S. tons) of hashish in the country's southeastern region, the state-run Anatolia news agency has reported.

Anatolia quoted security authorities as saying Turkish forces found the hashish during a raid in Yalaza village, north of Diyarbakır. It said the troops also found a makeshift drug-processing facility during the raid in the southeastern village.

Anatolia did not say when the raid was conducted or give an estimated street value for the hashish in its report published Saturday. The origin of the drugs was also not known.

Turkey is a major transit point for drugs smuggled from the Middle East and Asia to Europe.
