ISTANBUL - Türk Telekom has a brand value of $1.6 billion which makes it the most valuable brand in Turkey, according to a study by Capital, a monthly economy magazine. On the list, Turkcell ranks second, while Arçelik ranks third.

Monthly economy magazine Capital has selected the "most valuable brands of Turkey" in its fourth annual survey, announcing that Türk Telekom has a brand value of nearly $1.6 billion. The telecoms giant was followed by Turkcell, with $1.53 billion and Arçelik with $1.27 billion.

The magazine announced the results of its brand survey in its July issue. The survey was conducted jointly by Brand Finance, a global brand valuation company. The research was conducted by examining 100 companies,

Selection process

Türk Telekom, the winner, joined the selection process for the first time this year. As Türk Telekom entered the scene, Turkcell, last year’s top brand in value, became the second. Arçelik, the third in the survey, ranked fourth like last year. The top three were followed by Anadolu Efes, Migros and İşbank, all having a brand value above $1 billion. Last year, five companies ranked above the $1 billion mark.

Ford Otomotiv, Oyak Renault and Akbank followed the top six companies with brand values close to $1 billion.

According to the "Most Valuable Brands of Turkey 2009" survey, the total brand value of companies retreated by $44.3 million, or 1.69 percent. The total brand value of the top three firms retreated by 17 percent, or $922 million. But this fall in brand value is not big compared to other countries. The total brand value of "Brand Finance Global 500" firms retreated 24 percent.

Hürriyet Gazetecilik, which publishes Hürriyet, the flagship newspaper of the Doğan Media Group, ranked 22nd with a brand value of $307.57 million. Brand value of Doğan Gazetecilik, meanwhile, was calculated as $65 million.

David Haigh, chief executive of Brand Finance, said brand values in the Middle East are generally on thi rise. "This new trend will offer crucial opportunities for Turkish companies," he said. "At the moment, total brand value of Turkish firms are performing above the average. It would not be surprising to see more Turkish brands in the Global 500 list next year."
