ISTANBUL - The Erzurum Shopping Center, expected to open in the third quarter this year, received its BREEAM certificate, according to a press statement released by Redevco Turkey.

The center in the eastern Anatolian city of Erzurum is "the first green shopping center in Turkey." BREEAM, which stands for the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method, is the most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings. The certificate testifies that the "green design" concept of the shopping center surpasses standards in Turkey and reaches those in the European Union.

Redevco, part of Cofra Holding, owns one of the largest retail real estate portfolios in Europe, with properties in locations throughout its major cities. The company is active in 21 countries, including Turkey, and its real estate portfolio is valued at 7.2 billion euros.

"As a global company, instead of developing different standards, we choose to encourage the use of BREEAM as the green building standard," said Jaap Gillis, chief operating officer of Redevco. The Erzurum Shopping Center will be able to generate its own energy, according to Harold Reiniers, technical department director of Redevco Turkey. "As energy costs decrease, these systems would help our tenants, too," he said.
