ANKARA - Visitors to an Erzurum university Web site late friday would have read an unofficial message from a local religious community offering students a more pious accommodation during their term studies.

The official Web site of Erzurum Atatürk University carried the statement: "We have come to an agreement with the community of Kırkıncı Hodja. If you intend to strengthen your faith and restrain your earthly desires, you may apply to our deanship to stay at the aforementioned dorms."

Hikmet Koçak, the rector, said the was not authorized by the university and was the result of sabotage. "Hackers have broken our code. We are not involved in this matter," he said.

The message has since been removed from the Web site.

The message advised students at at the university to stay in the dorms of a religious brotherhood. The call posted on the official Web site of Erzurum Atatürk University was made by the rector of the university, Professor Hikmet Koçak, who denied making such a call.

The call from the university’s theology department was under the title, "An announcement to students." The message then read "Dear Students, as a result of the successful relationship we have established with the community of Kırkıncı Hodja, (40th Hodja), to serve you better, a contract has been signed which grants you the opportunity to benefit from community dorms, by honorable master Hodja’s grace.

If you too, want to live in a comfortable and peaceful environment while restraining your earthly desires, you may apply to our deanship to stay at the aforementioned dorms. With the intention of preparing you for a better future..."

The link to the call was posted by a secular group Atatürkçü Düşünce Topluluğu (Atatürk Thought Association) last Friday at 11 p.m., on the Web site "deauforum.com", from the 9 September University in İzmir. The announcement was removed the following day at 3 p.m. from Erzurum Atatürk University, right after a reporter from Hürriyet called the rector of the university.

Rector: I am unaware
Professor Hikmet Koçak, one of the rectors assigned by President Abdullah Gül, first told the reporter of the daily Hürriyet he knew nothing of the announcement and that he was surprised to hear about such a thing on the official Web site of the university, "We have enough dorms at the university to satisfy our need. I do not know whether somebody has used my name," Koçak said. A short while later, Koçak called Hürriyet and said: "What you have reported is true, there has been an advertisement on our Web site. Hackers have broken our code. We are not involved in this matter. I think this is the doing of someone who does not like our university."

A well-known religious brotherhood
Mehmed Kırkıncı, also known as Kırkıncı Hodja, lives in Erzurum and is one of the foremost community leaders opposing state intervention in religious functions. The community, call themselves Nurcular, follow the thinking of Said-i Nursî, an Islamic thinker of Kurdish origin who lived between 1878 and 1960 and the author of the Risale-i Nur Collection, a commentary on the Koran exceeding 6,000 pages. The community follows the example of Said-i Nursî by not having a beard and most of them just have moustaches. Because of this they are also called "the mustached" by Islamic circles. The students of Said-i Nursî have been divided into more than 10 factions since his death, the majority being at the community of Fettullah Gülen. The New Asia group, controlled by Mehmet Kutlular, follow the Gülen Community. Kırkıncı Hodja is also known as one of the diligent students of Said-i Nursî, since his death.
