At a press conference yesterday in Italy, lawyers for imprisoned former head of the PKK terror group, Abdullah Ocalan, said strands taken from Ocalan's hair showed evidence of the elements of strontium and chromium, which they said proved that Ocalan's life was at risk in the Turkish prison where he is being kept.

Speaking to the press, one of Ocalan's lawyers said "We do not know what affect these metals are having on our client. But we do believe that his life is under serious threat. We request that an international, independent law delegation go to Imrali Island to inspect the circumstance under which Ocalan is being kept, and to carry out a wide-ranging health examination."

Though a similar letter was sent by Ocalan's lawyers to the Bursa Republic Prosecutors' offices, the request was rejected, with the reason given as follows:

"Ocalan, as a prisoner serving a life sentence, does not have all rights normally extended to prisoners. He has not had any serious health problems up until today."
