ISTANBUL - Gregor Wende will officially start working as Lufthansa’s general manager for Turkey as of May 1. He began his career at Lufthansa in the auditing department in Cologne in 1979. In 1986 he was appointed to Frankfurt and worked as the assistant to Lufthansa’s vice president for sales.

In 1989 Wende was appointed to Ankara as manager for Central and Eastern Turkey. Between 1992 and 1996 he was in Antalya as the marketing director for SunExpress, a joint venture between Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines. From 1996 to 1998, Wende was the general manager in Osaka responsible for sales for western Japan.

Then he became Lufthansa’s general manager for Japan and was based in Tokyo until 2003. From that position he became Lufthansa’s representative and general manager in Beijing and now has moved to Turkey.

He was born in 1953 in Stuttgart, Germany, and went on to earn an advanced degree in international management at Lancaster University. Lufthansa regards Turkey as a very important destination and in spite of the global economic crisis, it has maintained its flights to Istanbul, Ankara, İzmir and Antalya. Business is expected to pick up in the second half of this year. The carrier announced Friday it had achieved the second best results in the company’s history with a net profit of 1.35 billion euros for 2008 and has proposed a dividend of 70 cents per share.
