In the lead up to May in Turkey, the governor of Istanbul had declared that police would use proportional force to prevent demonstrators from carrying out their demands to celebrate May Day in Taksim Square.

But the scenes we witnessed on May Day were like this:

Citizens without the power to resist being beaten by police while falling to the ground, helpless women kicked, and union offices raided and looted.

There was no difference in the actions of the police towards the demonstrators or the general public.

Any innocent passers-by could be targeted for a beating and be exposed to the effects of pepper spray.

I see two possibilities here; the first one being, either the police are not sufficiently educated on how to react and control these types of public gatherings; or the second, they lack the discipline to obey commands from their superiors.

Another possibility that I would rather not think about is that the governor did not entirely tell the truth and that the police had been commanded to “beat, break and disperse.”

What’s more it was not a secret that Istanbul would be locked down due to taken extraordinary security measures being taken for May Day.

And since May 1 was not pronounced an official public holiday, innocent members of the general public attempting to make their way to work were inconvenienced by disruptions to the public transportation system and found themselves caught up in the scuffles between demonstrators and police.

I do not believe that those who were responsible for the incidents witnessed throughout the day will be found and punished.

The only outcome in a situation like this: the citizens of this city will lose their respect and understanding for its governor and chief of police.

We live in one of the most beautiful cites of the world. Do you think that this city deserves such an administration?
