Mehmet Y. Yilmaz: Can we trust Barzani again

As I write this column, the Erdogan-Bush meeting has still not taken place. So I have no idea the outcome, though as I said yesterday, I certainly don't expect any important results.

Before the Erdogan-Bush meeting, there was a meeting which took place in northern Iraq, headed by Barzani, in which decisions were made on steps to be taken against the PKK.

These decisions included steps such as cutting the ties between the PKK and their mountain range camps, getting rid of logistic possibilities for the group, following and capturing those responsible for PKK activities in northern Iraqi cities, and preventing travel between the Mahmur camp and the Kandil mountain ranges.

I see all of these as steps well in advance of any steps that were taken in the past, but I doubt that these are going to satisfy a Turkish public which is up in arms over the events of the past months.

Also, had Barzani not made similar promises and talks in the past, this might all look a bit more sincere, but at this point, it's all too late to seem sincere.

One of the steps which absolutely must be taken at this point is to set up a mutual security bond between the northern Iraqi regional government and Turkey.

Barzani needs to know that he will never sit comfortably in power there if Turkey is being threatened. In fact, forget about sitting comfortably in power, he will never even be able to stand on leg comfortably there.

As for Turkey, it needs to understand that business in Iraq as we once knew it has changed for once and all, and that it is not possible that northern Iraq will turn back into what it once was. We need to comprehend that Barzani and Talabani are there, and that they are not going to go away. Arguments and the adoption of the "I don't recognize your power" stance are not going to help us anymore!
