ISTANBUL - While candidates compete for local elections with proposals to solve Istanbul’s traffic woes, Thursday’s heavy rain combined with Istanbul’s rush hour contributed to one candidate being an hour late for a meeting with foreign media.

"I apologize to all of you that I made you wait. I came here from Çatalca, where between two neighborhoods there is a distance of 53 kilometers," Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, Istanbul mayoral candidate of main opposition Republican People’s Party, or CHP, said. Gürsel Tekin, Istanbul province head of the CHP gave information about Kılıçdaroğlu and his team’s plans for Istanbul before Kılıçdaroğlu’s made a late arrival. "It is possible to build 20 kilometers of metro line every year in Istanbul. We are committed to building 80 kilometers of metro line within five years," Tekin said as one of their proposals to solve the traffic problems. Increasing the use of sea-ways for transportation is another plan.

Kılıçdaroğlu answered a question about daily Vakit’s story that his baby granddaughter was insured as a worker. Confirming that his granddaughter was insured, Kılıçdaroğlu said her family had her play in a commercial and the company insured her.

"However, I accept the critiques that the family of a politician should also be careful about these kinds of things. I do not regard such actions as correct," he said.
