SAKARYA - As a result of two and a half years of research and development, new trains were manufactured by Türk Ulaşım-Sen, the state transportation employees union. The trains will reach speeds of 160 kilometers an hour

Türk Ulaşım-Sen, the state transportation employees union, has announced that it has manufactured a 100-percent local-production train that will be compatible with existing railway lines.

Union president Nazmi Güzel told the Anatolia news agency that the project is the result of two and a half years of research and development with Öncüler Transportation Technologies. The new trains will be able to reach speeds of 160 kilometers an hour.

Güzel said the system is one of a kind. "It is beyond the research and development (stage) now. It is at the stage of mass production," he said. "We will put the vehicle we have produced on rails soon. I think the Turkish public will be proud, just like we are."

Each car carries itself

The newly developed system differs from existing ones in that "Each of our cars is like a locomotive. Each car carries itself," Güzel said. "Not like the present systems that have a 120-ton machine at the front and a wheeled mass behind it. It is like a four-wheel drive system. The wheels are electrical and independent of each other."

Sabahattin Çelik, an electricity and electronics engineer who was a railroad designer in Austria for 12 years, headed the research and development effort in Ankara, Güzel said.

In the global economic crisis, when people’s hopes are diminishing, such a production will give hope to everyone, Güzel said, adding that another fast rail vehicle will be ready for public presentation at the end of 2009: "We will offer this newly developed vehicle for the use of the Turkish public. We are experiencing its excitement already."

Güzel also said carrying a passenger from Ankara to Istanbul will cost them 1 Turkish Liras through this system. "We will make a big profit when we carry passengers for 10 liras," he said. "The system will pay for itself in a short time." Güzel explained that a single car on a subway system costs $1.5 million, and they can manufacture a set with four cars, including the motor. "Our country does not need to borrow from foreign resources for investments like this," he said.

"There is not another example of this technology existing in the world," Güzel added. "We are getting far ahead of Europe with this system. It keeps track of the road it travels in its memory and reduces the role of the machinist to a minimum."

Güzel also said they are incorporating new measures against potential terrorist attacks: "We will develop guiding vehicles to send before the trains. These guiding vehicles will notify the train coming from behind of the traps that lie ahead."
