İZMİR - The İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, which has cared for 1,000 street cats and dogs in two different shelters, is preparing to open a huge new animal shelter, expected to be Turkey’s biggest and most modern.

Located on 21,000 square meters in İzmir’s Seyrek district, the new shelter will be capable of rehabilitating 1,000 dogs and cats.

According to a statement by the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, the dogs and cats will sleep on bunk beds rather than on the ground. "We are breeding, treating and sterilizing and then registering these street animals. Our aim is to save these street animals from unhealthy situations on the streets," the statement read.
