26th Criminal Court in Ankara ruled to convict a husband, who presents the bilateral talks with his wife that he recorded without permission as evidence to the court, to 6-month jail with the crime of "violation of privacy".

-- ERDOGAN TO HOST BALL IN NEW YORK
Turkey's election as a non-permanent member to the United Nations (U.N.) Security Council for the term 2009-2010 will be celebrated at a ball in New York. It will be hosted by Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan. The ball will take place at Cipriani Club in the city and guests will include U.N. Security Council permanent members and ambassadors.

-- TURKISH SCIENTIST SOLVES SECRET OF LETHAL STROKES
Genetic differences, which may make people more vulnerable to potentially lethal strokes, have been discovered by a team led by Turkish doctor Prof. Dr. Murat Gunel. Swellings in the brain's blood vessels called aneurysms can lie undetected up until the moment they rupture. The international team compared the genes of 10,000 aneurysm patients and healthy volunteers, picking out clues. The results could lead to the development of an "early warning" system.

Almost all sectors have been affected by a 6.4 percent shrinkage in the manufacturing industry in Turkey. While the Turkish textile industry shrank by 17.6 percent, the electronics industry also cut the output in September.

-- AGREEMENT FOR A NEW LOAN WITH IMF WON'T HURT OUR HONOR, BUSINESS NGO CHAIRPERSON
The chairperson of the Turkish Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association (TUSIAD), Arzuhan Dogan Yalcindag, said that Turkey would need financial resources in 2009 in order to pay back loans. "Turkey should make a new agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and receive new loans. Such an agreement won't hurt Turkey's honor," Yalcindag said.

-- TURKISH NEUROSURGEON IDENTIFIES GENES CAUSING BRAIN ANEURISM
A Turkish neurosurgeon has identified three genes that cause aneurisms, blood-filled dilatation of a blood vessel in the brain, making a groundbreaking find which may help preventing cerebral hemorrhages. Prof. Murat Gunel, chairman of the Neurosurgery Department at Yale University, has found that a defect in one the three genes increased the risk of brain aneurisms. "A simple blood test will determine the risk and help prevent the hemorrhage," Gunel said.

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the great leader and founder of modern Turkey, was commemorated on Monday on the 70th anniversary of his death. Senior state figures attended a ceremony in the Turkish capital, Ankara. The top state and military brass visited Ataturk's mausoleum, Anitkabir.

-- TWO MORE SOLDIERS HEADED FOR TRIAL IN JOURNALIST ASSASSINATION
A local administrative court in the Black Sea province of Trabzon moved to bring a non-commissioned officer and a senior sergeant before the courts regarding the assassination of Turkish-Armenian journalist, Hrant Dink. Huseyin Yilmaz and Haci Omer Unalir will be tried for negligence in taking precautions to prevent the murder of Dink despite having intelligence warning of the assassination in advance.

Thousands of elderly and young Turks gathered to place flowers on the Mausoleum of Turkey's founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk (Anitkabir) on Monday, the day that marked the 70th anniversary of Ataturk's passing. A total of 232,177 Turks visited Anitkabir on Monday.

The Turkish Religious Affairs Department will hire 200 female preachers. The female preachers must be graduates of the Theology Faculty.

-- INDUSTRIAL OUTPUT DOWN BY 5.5 PERCENT
Turkey's industrial output dropped by 5.5 percent in September 2008 over the same month of 2007, the Turkish Board of Statistics (TUIK) announced. TUIK said that production fell by 6.4 percent in the manufacturing industry and by 4.3 percent in the mining industry while it increased by 1.6 percent in power, gas and water sectors.

-- AGAR TO APPEAR BEFORE COURT
Mehmet Agar, a former minister, will appear before the courts under the Susurluk case for the first time today. Agar could not be tried earlier because of his political immunity.

-- TURKISH PREMIER DUE TO U.S.
Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan is set to pay a formal visit to the United States on Nov. 13-17. Erdogan will participate at the G-20 summit and hold meetings on global financial crisis. Erdogan will also host a dinner for United Nations representatives in the New Siant Regis Hotel for Turkey's election as a non-permanent member to the Security Council.

-- FORMER MINISTER FACES TRIAL IN SUSURLUK CASE
Mehmet Agar, a former interior minister and police department chief, will go on trial for his suspected involvement in what is publicly known as the Susurluk case, which has revealed links between state officials and the mafia. Agar will be tried for establishing a criminal network and aiding a notorious hit man.
