Construction of additional prison facility on Imrali Island where Abdullah Ocalan, head of the PKK terrorist organization has been serving a life sentence, will be completed in June. Afterwards, some 6-8 prisoners will be sent to the island to serve their terms.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu met with his Iraqi counterpart Hoshyar Zebari and was received by President Bashar al-Asad of Syria on the sidelines of a meeting of foreign ministers at the Organization of the Islamic Conference, or OSCE, in Damascus. During the meetings, he promised to provide Iraq and Syria with much more water.

Prof. Dr. Gokhan Hotamisligil, the chair of the department of Genetics and Complex Diseases at Harvard University, demonstrated that a molecule produced by adipocytes could play a key role in treatment of a number of common diseases such as cancer. Speaking to the Anatolian Agency in southern province of Antalya, Hotamisligil said that a strong link existed between dietary trends and a number of common diseases such as cancer, diabetes and atherosclerosis. "We have developed several mice models that are deficient in adipocyte/macrophage fatty acid binding proteins, or FABP, and demonstrated that these animals were protected from some of the most detrimental effects of dietary intake of high levels of calories and fatty acids through alterations in the gene expression pattern of adipocytes, macrophages and systemic metabolic responses," he said.

-- MURDERER OF 33 MARTYRS KILLED
The head of a group of the terrorist organization PKK, who martyred 33 soldiers on the highway between southern provinces of Elazig and Bingol on May 24, 1993, was killed. Mehmet Sogut, the head of terrorist group, was killed in an operation waged on May 11.

Besiktas defeated Galatasaray and entered the last week of the Turkish Super League two points ahead of their closest rivals, Sivasspor, and three points ahead of Trabzonspor who also won their last games. Besiktas won with goals by Bobo and Yusuf to reached 68 points, while Sivasspor raised their points to 66 and Trabzonspor to 65. If Besiktas win against Denizlispor in their last game they will clinch the championship. If they draw, Sivasspor will have to beat Galatasaray in an away game by at least 3 goals.

Traffic officer Ufuk Senturk, 27, was killed in Yuksekova town of Hakkari when a road side bomb was detonated by remote.

The 4th congress of the Great Union Party, or BBP, was held after the political party's leader Muhsin Yazicioglu was killed in a helicopter crash. Members of the audience attending the congress were often moved to tears at the sight of the leader’s empty chair.

Libananco Holding requests $21.5 billion in compensation from Turkey for its alleged shares in Cukurova and Kepez Electricity Distribution Co. The ongoing trial has begun send dangerous signals to Turkey. In the meantime, Libananco formed a team of former FBI and CIA agents to investigate all documents about sequestration of those companies.

-- SWEEPING COSTS CAN BE PAID WITH THREE YEARS OF ORGANIC FARMING
The government project which was prepared by the Kilis Governor's Office for the sweeping of the mine fields for the purposes of opening these lands for agriculture, showed that only three years of organic farming could pay the cost of clearing mines from near the border. If the Justice and Development Party’s, or AKP,  draft law proposal which is expected to be adopted in parliament this week takes effect, the company that wins the tender will be given the right to conduct organic farming for up to 44 years, for the mine sweeping costs that could be recovered after only three years of organic farming.

-- CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT PACKAGE PUT ASIDE
The AKP administration which has been working on a constitutional amendment package, including arrangements for making it harder to shut down political parties and changing the structure of the Constitutional Court, decided to put it aside for now. Political analysts say the package could be left for the new legislative year as the AKP waits for debates to calm.

A police officer was killed in Yuksekova town of southeastern province of Hakkari the previous day. Another police officer died in a bomb attack in the town on Sunday. Security teams launched operations in Yuksekova.

-- INCENTIVES FOR TURKEY
State Minister Cevdet Yilmaz said that Turkey would be grouped into four or five regions according to their level of development and the government would provide incentives to the regions of Turkey. Yilmaz said that the package of incentives would be completed soon.

-- GOVERNMENT TO PROVIDE INCENTIVES FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY
The government is aiming to revive investments that were halted due to the economic crisis, and will give a price guarantee to the renewable energy. According to the regulation, incentives will be given to solar energy for 20 years and the government will provide incentives to other energy sources for 10 years.

The congress of the Great Union Party, or BBP, was held in an atmosphere of great sorrow. The participants commemorated BBP leader Muhsin Yazicioglu who died in a helicopter crash a few months ago. Yalcin Topcu was elected unchallenged to the post of party chairman during the party congress.
