KONYA - After working as a masseur for Turkcell Super League side Konyaspor, Uğur Çimen was appointed head coach of the Canadian first division football team the North York Astros.

Çimen contacted the Canadian team shortly after he left Konyaspor. The Astros, which was the runner-up of the league last year, wanted to work with Çimen, making him the second Turk to coach a team in Canada, following Rasim Kara, who led the Ottawa Wizards to three titles from 2001 to 2003.

"As a trainer from Konya, I am now on the other side of the world, in a country where football is slowly growing," said Çimen.

"We talked with the board members on what can be done in the long term," he said. "The Canadian under-21 national team will play in a tournament in Turkey, and I will coach that team as well."
