MUĞLA - Three meter high reeds that line the Dalyan Canal Ğ a 12 meter stretch that connects Lake Köyceğiz with the Mediterranean in Muğla’s Dalyan district Ğ have been anonymously hacked down.

Environmentalists have protested the cutting of the reeds, while the Environment Protection Association, or ÖÇKK, and local municipalities have taken legal action. Abidin Kurt, a member of the board of Nature Sports and the Environment Protection Foundation, or DOSÇEV, said tourist facility owners complained annually that tourists could not see the facilities because of the reeds.

"Developing fast, Dalyan is losing its natural beauty as fast as it is growing. Where will those rare animals live? The tourists come here to see nature. Those responsible for the cutting of the reeds should be punished," he said. Suat Tufan, Dalyan mayor, said an extensive investigation was launched.
