ANKARA - The aesthetics of a city are important, therefore Turkish cities should have infrastructure plans to offer citizens a better life.

Chairman of Parliament’s Environment Commission Mustafa Öztürk said 6.5 billion cubic meters of water passes through the main pipes in Turkey and 3.3 billion cubic meters disappears before it reaches households.

According to Öztürk, serious government initiatives should be taken to develop cities but with the approaching local elections in Turkey, mayoral candidates are competing and quarreling with each other rather than producing and offering new projects for cities. "The candidates should put forward environment and infrastructure projects and talk about their plans to launch them." Öztürk said one of the biggest urban problems Turkey is drinking water. "Nearly 50 percent of the limited drinking water in Turkey disappears before it reaches households. The water passing through the mains totals 6.5 billion cubic meters and we lose most of it. Cities need professional management of water."

Öztürk said mayoral candidates should discuss how to stop the loss of water and how to use it efficiently. According to information given in the past, a person in Europe used 250 liters of water each day. The number currently has decreased to 120 liters. Öztürk said candidates should try to better manage wastewater treatment instead of promising a pier in Kayseri.

"There are garbage bins along the main avenues of most of the cities in Turkey. It is impossible to see garbage bins in the streets of other cities in the world," Öztürk said. Packaging makes up 20 percent of solid waste in Turkey and to improve the economy, Turkey should have recycling facilities, he said. Öztürk also said the energy consumption per household was twice as much that in Germany.
