BURSA - Social-support police from the Bursa security department are giving 10,000 local women self-defense training that will help them protect themselves against crime.

The aim of the training program is to raise awareness about different types of robbery scenarios and teach women about the safety precautions they can take against each one.

During a training session, policeman Bülent Kaplan shocked his audience when he used the example of a scenario where a couple divorced because of a robbery. Kaplan explained that a couple returning home together one night encountered a burglar in their house who claimed to be having an affair with the man’s wife.

"Why did you invite me here if you were going to be here with your husband?" the robber asked as he left the house. According to Kaplan, the couple separated after this incident and did not reunite until the burglar was caught.

A more common scenario Kaplan described to his audience was one where people who break in claim to be police officers. "Often these people look no different from me; they even have walkie-talkies and therefore can easily make you believe they are officers," Kaplan said. These police often cite a burglary in the house as their reason for entering.
According to Kaplan, they generally ask the female member of the house to show them where the valuables are so they can check if anything has been stolen, after which they take these items themselves. In the training program, police advise women to be careful as they approach their homes. They are told that if they see anything suspicious, such as an open door or window, they should not enter the house but instead immediately call emergency services. If they come face-to-face with a burglar, the women were told not to panic but act cold-blooded and not show that they feel scared or threatened. In the event of a robbery, victims are also advised to pay attention to details so the suspects can be identified more easily later on. In addition to this training, police also offer psychological support to people who have been victims of robberies.
