BEYŞEHİR - The inhabitants of Konya’s Beyşehir district travel to the islands in the lake to pick up kuzugöbeği - a specialty mushroom - by organizing boat tours. Now, because of heavy rain, mushroom numbers have reached their highest levels in the Beyşehir Lake Basin.

The manager of the yacht port in Beyşehir, Ahmet Bülbül said that the only way to reach the islands is by boat and the fishermen boats cannot go around the lake because it is closed season for fishing. "Except than those owning their own speedboats, we take the people who want to go to the islands. The inhabitants of Beyşehir who found out that the kuzugöbeği mushroom grows here after the April rains showed great interest in the boat tours," he said, and added that they have added extra tours to the islands for weekends.

Extra time
When the boat stops at Yılanlı Island they give extra time for people to go picking mushrooms. "The island mushrooms are more lightly colored and have different shapes compared to those on Anamas Mountain," Bülbül said.

Most of the people cook the mushrooms at home for themselves, though there are people who sell them. During the summer, a kilogram of dried mushrooms sells for about 80 Turkish liras and in spring fresh ones go for 35 liras a kilogram.
