ISTANBUL - Yet to be beaten in a game it played this season, Beşiktaş hopes to win the weekend’s opening game in the TurkcellSuper League. If it can beat Istanbul Municipality tonight, Beşiktaş will be able to sit through the weekend and wait for its rivals to drop points

Beşiktaş has to love playing in the Turkcell Super League’s first game of the weekend. It plays a stress-free match Friday and spends the weekend watching a few of its rivals slump. At least that was what happened last week, and the Black Eagles must hope for a repeat performance.

Last Friday, Beşiktaş beat Gaziantepspor with three goals in the second half of the game. The following two days were full of blessings for the Istanbul team. First, lowly Denizlispor defeated Trabzonspor and Fenerbahçe lost 1-0 at the hands of Gençlerbirliği on Saturday. Things only got better for the Black Eagles on Sunday, when Galatasaray was trounced 5-2 by Kocaelispor, the bottom-dweller at that time, and parted ways with coach Michael Skibbe to escape the chaos. When match day 21 ended, it was as if Beşiktaş had had a 12-point breakthrough in three days. If coach Mustafa Denizli’s team can beat Istanbul Municipality tonight, it will only benefit from the Sunday game, a battle between league leader Sivasspor and fourth-place local arch rival Fenerbahçe.

However, the game at the İnönü Stadium may not be an easy one, as Istanbul Municipality has disappointed Beşiktaş several times in the last two years.

Istanbul Municipality remains unbeaten against Beşiktaş, with one win and two draws. Two of those slumps caused Beşiktaş to slip from the top spot of the league.

Earlier this year, Beşiktaş lost the top spot in the fifth week after a 1-1 draw at the Istanbul Atatürk Olympic Stadium.

Beşiktaş is counting on keeping its recent form, as it is on a nine-game unbeaten streak in all the games the team has played in 2009.

Five of them were within the league, making Beşiktaş one of the best-performing teams in the second period of the Turkcell Super League, a spot it will keep if it can avoid another upset by Istanbul Municipality tonight on its own ground.
