ISTANBUL - Outlet Independent Art Space, which has been a breath of fresh air in Istanbul’s contemporary art scene for its distinctive works by Turkish and foreign artists, is presenting its last exhibition of the season through July 4.

"No Room for Panic" includes pieces by Ayşe Topçuoğulları, Berat Işık, Mehmet Ali Boran, Ceren Oykut, Bengü Karaduman and Evrensel Belgin, diverse artists who came together in one show to depict lives and worlds affected by militarism.

Topçuoğulları’s work tells a story of "fictive manhood" that is still being constructed through the experience of military service, while Işık depicts with cinematographic irony a "Woman in Red" who walks rhythmically to suggestive tunes Ğ his approach to living bombs. An iconic frame from Marilyn Monroe’s film "The Seven Year Itch" is re-edited along with the song "You Are My Angel." While Karaduman brings a personal take to the issue of mutuality with her double-paper works, Oykut magnifies the incidents she detects from within the crowd.

Boran makes youngsters sitting in coffeehouses come to attention with an undefined cue. In another coffeehouse, it appears natural to be frisked. Finally, Bilgin’s installation of images of F16s projected onto a peaceful landscape leaves a chilling impression.

Downstairs in the Outlet Project Room, visitors can see Mustafa Kunt’s installation "Zonk Zonk" and Özlem Günyol’s T-shirt designs, which were inspired by Kunt’s work. The two guests of the Outlet Project Room break with conventions with their singular installations. Intertwining images of dancing youngsters meet with shadows on the wall in such a way that boundaries are blurred by the juxtaposition.

"Zonk Zonk" emphasizes the effect of our cultural experiences on our conceptualization of images and the T-shirts designed to go along with the installation carry these images into daily life. "No Room For Panic" is on view through July 4. The Outlet Independent Art Space is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
