Foreign Ministry spokesman Namik Tan has commented on a statement made earlier in the week by US Ambassador to Ankara, Ross Wilson. Tan said today that Ambassador Wilson, who referred publicly this week to the "ongoing cacophony" in Turkish politics, should stay away from making analyses of Turkey's domestic political situation. Tan's comments came in response to questions from reporters at a press conference today.

While Tan acknowledged that Ambassador Wilson's comments regarding Turkey were generally very positive, the Foreign Ministry spokesman said "But what I would like to add is this: that diplomatic representatives in Turkey can avoid the risk of being misunderstood for their commentsn if they avoid making public analyses of the country's domestic political situation."

Wilson's "cacophony" comment was made October 3, and came in response to verbal sparring between President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the top commander of the Turkish Armed Forces, General Yasar Buyukanit, in regards to "religious reactionaryism" in Turkey.
