The victory of the AKP in Sunday's general elections was striking in the southeastern, heavily Kurdish regions of the nation, with the largely Kurdish backed Democratic Society (DTP) Party commenting "The high vote going to the AKP has ruined our plans."

The AKP received 71.53% in Bingol, 65.21% in Adiyaman, 60.59% Sanliurfa, 58.90% in Bitlis, and 52.74% in Van. The DTP had counted on having a number of independent MPs voted in from these cities.Â
