PARIS - Aviation disasters over water are relatively rare. Here are the most serious of such disasters in the past 10 years, many of them occurring shortly before take-off or landing.

October 31, 1999: UNITED STATES - An EgyptAir Boeing 767 crashes off the US coast 30 minutes after take-off from New York, killing 217 people. An inquiry failed to establish if the crash was accidental or a suicide attempt by the co-pilot.

January 31, 2000: IVORY COAST - A Kenya Airways Airbus A310 with 179 people on board crashes into the sea two minutes after take-off from Abidjan airport. All but 10 on board were killed.
- On the same day: UNITED STATES - An Alaska Airlines MD-80 crashes into the sea 35 kilometers (20 miles) north of Los Angeles due to a mechanical problem. Eighty-eight people are killed.

August 24, 2000: BAHRAIN - A Gulf Air Airbus A320, flying from Cairo, crashes into the Gulf of Bahrain shortly before landing, killing 143. Â

May 7, 2002: CHINA - A MD-82 belonging to China Northern Airlines crashes into the sea near Dalian in northeastern China, killing 112. A fire, signaled by the pilot, was the cause of the disaster.

May 25, 2002: TAIWAN - A Boeing 747-200 belonging to Taiwan’s China Airlines crashes 50 kilometers (30 miles) off Taiwan. None of the 225 on board survived. Taiwanese civil aviation authorities said the aircraft broke up in mid-air.

December 25, 2003: BENIN - A Boeing operated by French airliner UTA crashes into the sea on take-off from Cotonou, killing 139; there were 21 survivors.

January 3, 2004: EGYPT - A Boeing 737 of Egypt’s Flash Airlines crashes into the Red Sea several minutes after take-off off from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, killing 148.

May 3, 2006: RUSSIA - An Airbus A320 of the Armenian company Armavia crashes into the Black Sea shortly before landing at Sochi, killing 113.

January 1, 2007: INDONESIA - A Boeing 737 of Indonesian airline Adam Air, flying from Surabaya, Java to Manado, Sulawesi, crashes into the sea with 102 people on board. The first pieces of debris were found 10 days later.
