ISTANBUL - Turkish and Australian footballers will pay homage to their ancestors as the two countries’ youth national football teams play a game in Çanakkale on Sunday to commemorate ANZAC Day.

The under-16 national teams of Turkey and Australia will play a football match Sunday at the 18 Mart Stadium in Çanakkale, where thousands of soldiers died in the Battle of Gallipoli 94 years ago.

Speaking about the game, Turkish Football Federation General Secretary Metin Kazancıoğlu said the idea came from the Australian side.

Meaningful game
"We were excited when the Australian Football Federation came with the idea to play such a meaningful game," said Kazancıoğlu, adding that he believed the event will contribute to the collaboration between the two countries.

The match will be preceded by a cocktail reception in Istanbul on ANZAC Day, with the participation of the foreign affairs and defense ministers of Australia. The kick-off for the game at the 18 Mart Stadium will be at 2 p.m. Sunday.
