We birds get our food in a variety of ways Ñ insects, bugs, other birds and even fish. Our fishing relatives can just dive straight down and pluck their dinners right out of the water. We see humans are really crippled when it comes to catching fish. They throw out these long lines with hooks that contain bait in hopes that the fish will be so desperately hungry that they will ignore any warning sign that they shouldn’t swallow the baited hook.

The Gaza crisis has been a distracting factor in our hunt for food because humans have now been using the bait-and-switch technique in the fighting there. The Hamas humans have been lobbing bombs into Israel for several years but more now that the latest cease-fire has ended. As far as we can understand, these bombs were very occasional and only rarely caused death but of course became a great psychological burden. Then with the end of the cease-fire, the number of bombs increased.

Naturally as human beings with families and jobs, occasional bombings can be a real irritant as much as they are moderately dangerous. Now consider the fact that Hamas stepped up the missile lobbying.

It seems that the Israelis took the bait that Hamas laid out for them. They have become Goliath, a symbolic juggernaut attacking the young Davut who has only some homemade missiles and AK-47s, who has to hide out in basements and bunkers and whose leaders have been exiled.

Changing tides
Every day Israel fell deeper into the trap as their troops advanced and helicopters and airplanes bombed the city. World opinion that had originally been convinced through long years of propaganda to accept whatever Israel was prepared to do has now changed. So many civilians have been killed or wounded, pictures of children left in hunger beside dead parents, wounded, crying.

Israel has lost the moral high ground just as the United States did with the attack on Iraq. There are marches in many major cities around the world. The country can no longer claim that its citizens are the result of the Holocaust or persecution in racist countries. Israelis are no longer victims. Palestinians are.

Hamas set out the baited fishing line and Israel gobbled it up without thinking twice. Hamas now has more sympathy than it has ever had before and throughout the world. Israel has become the big, bad bully, a tag it may deserve for pressing on with its attack on the Gaza strip in the midst of such an international outcry. In spite of its supposed surgical strikes, more than 1,000 people have been killed with a large proportion of these women and children. And how is one supposed to understand surgical strikes that take out health clinics, schools, hospitals and United Nations facilities including food and medicine depots.

But Hamas for its part has exhibited a mentality of "We’ll fight to the end," they say regardless of human life and destruction. They only give the current cease-fire one week to work during which they will assess their damages and see whether they can push on.

Does anyone except Israelis remember Masada the first century A.D. fortress where the Jews chose to commit suicide than live as slaves under the Romans? Why does this seem similar? But Muslims aren’t trying to commit suicide. They are trying to be martyrs.

Ponder our thoughts, dear humans, for your own benefit.
