ISTANBUL - Ankara’s chief prosecutor has opened a case against four people alleged to have organized the murder of prominent journalist Uğur Mumcu, reported the private news site NTVMSNBC yesterday.

Mumcu was killed 16 years ago by a bomb in his car parked in front of his house. The four members of the illegal "Tevhid-Selam Kudüs Ordusu" (Techid-Selam Jerusalem Army) are alleged to have undertaken 17 separate bomb and armed attacks, including murdering academics Bahriye Üçok and Mehmet Ali Kışlalı.

Leaders of the organization
Three of the members are alleged to be leaders of the organization, while the other is claimed to be just a member. The indictment in the case includes significant information about the structure, foundation, aims, and internal and external activities of the illegal organization.

The murder of Mumcu is also part of the ongoing Ergenekon case indictment, which has created hopes in one part of society that this new case will shed light on the "Deep State."

Mehmet Ağar, a former police chief and deputy who was not previously tried for alleged connections to the Susurluk scandal, made statements in an earlier interview implying the state had a role in the assassination of Mumcu.

The Susurluk Scandal concerned a car crash that disclosed connections between the mafia and the state. Ağar is currently in trial in the Susurluk case because his immunity has ended.
