The Turkish delegation, headed by Transportation Minister Binali Yildirim, passes through Tehran to where it is met by huge iron doors reminiscent of Baghdad and the Saddam Hussein era of the 1990s.Â

Ahmedinejad's office is located inside a palace left over from the Shah's era which ended with the Islamist revolution in 1979. Inside the palace the delegation are led into a huge lounge with a fountain centerpiece.

"Once upon a time, the fountain was in use to make a noise when important and confidential issues were discussed in the room; so that nobody could hear what was being spoken," a diplomat said to explain the function of the decoration.

HEAVY DIPLOMATIC TRAFFIC Â
The Turkish delegation is just one of the important guests being welcomed at the Shah-era palace that night. Prior to Turkey’s arrival, Ahmadinejad met with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, and earlier with a delegation from Syria.

The Turkish delegation was personally welcomed by Ahmadinejad, who without the help of the interpreter, gestured in response to their greetings, an important sign that demonstrates his understanding of the language.

The meeting comes at a very critical time as the U.S. indicates plans to seek a new era in relations with Iran amid suggestions that the Islamic republic has the capability to develop nuclear weaponry.

Ahmadinejad has sent the message that he is open to dialogue based on a logical framework, which is in line with the mutual interests of all parties, in an effort to bring down the walls that separate Iran from the outside world.

The 30-minute meeting resulted in a clear sign that Tehran is likely to come into the international political spotlight soon.
