Vodafone said in a statement that under its accord with Apple, it will also gain the right to sell iPhones in the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal and India.

The phones that it sells will be intended to work on the Vodafone network. Launched one year ago, officially the iPhone is only available in the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Ireland and Austria.

The Vodaphone-iPhone distribution agreement is seen as a win against Telefonica SA's O2 and Carphone Warehouse Group Plc, to which it lost the rights to distribute Apple's combination media player and mobile phone in the UK last year.

Apple sold almost 4 million iPhones last year and it reiterated its plans to capture more buyers outside the U.S. and expects to ship 10 million iPhones in 2008.
