--TURKISH PRESIDENT, NOBEL LAURATE LAUNCH FRANKFURT BOOK FAIR
The 60th Frankfurt Book Fair was launched on Tuesday at a ceremony with the participation of President Abdullah Gul and Turkey's Nobel winning novelist Orhan Pamuk. "Turkey has complied with the European Union standards to a great extent in freedom of speech and expression, and in respect for cultural diversity," Gul said. Turkey is the guest of honor at the five-day fair that features over 250 events on Turkish literature and culture.

--MINDS ARE CHANGING
Justice Minister Mehmet Ali Sahin said preliminary forensic reports showed that a man named Engin Ceber was tortured to death in Metris prison in Istanbul. "I am offering my apologies to his family on behalf of my state and my government," Sahin told reporters on Tuesday. Sahin said two senior prison officials, a prison guard and medical doctor were dismissed from duty. Ceber was arrested for resisting police while distributing flyers. He was placed in Metris prison. A week later, he was sent from prison to hospital suffering trauma and died in the intensive care unit.

--IS LIGHT SEEN IN CRISIS HOLE?
After the U.S. Treasury said it would buy $250 billion of bank stakes, markets skyrocketed around the world. European stock markets rose over 10 percent. Turkey's stock market, the Istanbul Stock Exchange (IMKB), soared 5.44 percent while the U.S. dollar weakened against the Turkish lira.

--BRING YOUR MONEY IN SUITCASES
The Turkish government plans to draw deposits of Turkish people living abroad against the risk of the current account deficit that hit $47 billion. The Ministry of Finance is working on a new regulation that would enable people to transfer their money into the country in suitcases or via banks without question. However, it is not clear how to avoid money laundering.

--NEW UNIT TO FIGHT TERRORISM
Turkey's Higher Board of Counter-Terrorism decided to form a new organizational structure under the Ministry of the Interior with the aim of establishing coordination in the fight against terrorism. Such a demand came from the military, officials said.

--5 CRUCIAL DECISIONS AGAINST TERRORISM
A very important decision was made in the security summit that was held under the leadership of Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara. The fight against terrorism from now on will be carried out in the coordination of the Security Undersecretariat that would be established within the scope of the Interior Ministry. The new Undersecretariat will be the authorized center against terrorism. The management of the fight against terrorism will totally be left to a civilian initiative in the future. The military will be responsible for border security and the external threat and professional security forces will cope with the threat of terrorism.

--FOR FIRST TIME STATE APOLOGIZES
Justice Minister Mehmet Ali Sahin made public the report of an investigation into Engin Ceber who was tortured to death while in Metris prison. "The cause of his death is maltreatment. I apologize on behalf of my government and my state," Sahin said.

--SURPRISE FROM TURKISH AIRLINES
While its global rivals are dealing with the global economic crisis, Turkish Airlines (THY) announced that it would order 105 new passenger jets. THY would spend around $6 billion for the new airplanes. THY's fleet would increase two fold by the year 2023. THY expects to grow 20 percent in 2008 despite the ongoing global financial crisis.

--SPEED LIMIT TO INCREASE ON TURKISH ROADS
A new draft law at the Turkish Parliament increases the speed limit on Turkish roads and highways. According to the new draft law, speed limit on highways would increase to 135 kilometers from the present 120 kilometers per hour, and it would rise to 120 from 90 km/h on roads. Municipalities may increase the speed limit in cities to over 50 kilometers per hour.

--GOVERNMENT ADMITS TORTURE
Justice Minister Mehmet Ali Sahin apologized to the family of Engin Ceber who died of torture in prison and police station. Sahin said an investigation into the case was continuing and that 19 people were suspended. "Those who are responsible for this will be punished under the law," he said.

--ALL EYES ON TURKEY
The Frankfurt Book Fair, which hosts Turkey as the guest of honor this year with the theme of "Turkey in all Colors", was inaugurated officially with opening speeches by President Abdullah Gul and Nobel laureate Turkish author Orhan Pamuk. More than 100 publishers, 350 writers and translators and 320 artists will represent Turkey at the fair.

--STATE FOR FIRST TIME APOLOGIZES FOR TORTURE VICTIM
Developments after the death of Engin Ceber under torture went beyond the statements "investigation is underway" which Turkey has become accustomed to. A very strict investigation was launched following pressure from the government, the opposition and NGOs. Justice Minister Mehmet Ali Sahin said two inspectors prepared the preliminary reports regarding the incident in Metris Prison. Regarding the torture death of Engin Ceber, Sahin said, "I apologize on behalf of my state and my government."

--75 AIRCRAFT TO BE PURCHASED
Turkish Airlines (THY) will buy 25 planes, duel corridors planes for long-haul flights and 50 single corridor planes for short and medium flights. The number of planes that would be purchased can rise to 105 with the option for more. THY said they had withstood the crisis strongly.

--ELECTION ALSO HAS A FAIR
A market of 1.2 billion YTL brought about by political elections created a new fair. The first election fair of the world will be organized in Ankara on Jan. 15-18. A total of 150 companies are expected to attend the fair.

--BARZANI RECEIVES MESSAGE
Ankara warned for the last time Kurdish leaders who tolerate the presence of terrorist organization PKK in north of Iraq. Turkey's Special Envoy to Iraq Murat Ozcelik met with the head of the regional administration of north of Iraq Massoud Barzani on Tuesday. Ozcelik conveyed Ankara's message to Barzani that he should cut their support to the PKK. This was the first time in five years that Ankara held direct talk with Barzani.

--TURKISH PRESIDENT FOR WORLD TOURISM
Turkey's Hulya Aslantas has been elected the new President of Skal International, International Association of Travel and Tourism Professionals, in a congress held in Taiwan. Skal International has 22,000 members in 90 countries.
