"They will review a broad agenda of diplomatic and security issues as well as where we are now in the global energy market," said John Hannah, Cheney's national security adviser.

Cheney was given a traditional welcome by the king at Riyadh airport after his arrival from Afghanistan. Saudi forces provided an honour guard for the US vice president.

"They'll have ample discussions about the problems that exist in the market ... how they lend themselves to various kinds of solutions," he told reporters aboard the Air Force Two vice presidential plane.

He said the two men would talk about the need for closer cooperation "to try and stabilize this market, reduce the volatility in the market and serve the interests both of consumers and producers alike."
