Turkish jobless rate unchanged at 9.9% in 2007

Turkish unemployment rate was percent 9.9 in 2007 unchanged from the previous year, the Turkish Statistics Institute said on Thursday. The number of people in employment totaled 21.189 million in 2007, while the number of unemployed totaled 2.333 million.
 In the corresponding period last year, the number of employed totaled 20.954 million, while the number of unemployed totaled 2.295 million.  The national statistics office said the number of those employed in non-agricultural sectors rose 347,000, while the number of people employed in the agricultural sector fell 112,000 in 2007.  Excluding the agricultural sector, the unemployment rate was 12.6% in 2007, unchanged from a year earlier.
nemployment remains high despite Turkey's economic recovery. In 2006, the State Planning Agency forecast that 1.7 million new jobs would be created in Turkey between 2006 and 2008, but it also said the unemployment rate wasn't expected to fall below 9.6% before the end of 2008.              Â
