Turkey supports Syria to take active role in Mideast

The deputy foreign minister of Syria said on Wednesday that Turkey supported his country for an active role in the Middle East.

In an exclusive interview with the Anadolu Agency (AA), Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad said that the Middle East was a problematic region.

"Those happening in Iraq and Afghanistan and Iran's nuclear file are of common importance for Syria and Turkey," Mekdad said.

Mekdad also said that good relations between Turkey and Syria were reflected on the region, and told AA that recent talks between Turkish and Syrian executives indicated how important it was to exchange views on regional matters, particularly security and peace in the Middle East.

The Syrian deputy minister said that Turkey was mediating between Syria and Israel, and appreciated Turkey's efforts. Mekdad also said that his country would work to boost relations with Turkey.
