ISTANBUL - The magic of flamenco and the elegance of jazz come together in Turkey for the first time in the latest performance from the Antonio Najarro Dance Company, which fuses together two wholly different genres, creating a unique and sophisticated dance spectacle.
"Jazzing Flamenco" modernizes Spanish classical dance by bringing together jazz, blues, soul and flamenco, inspiring a unique style of choreography, rhythm and movement.
In an interview with Turkish DJ Cenk Erdem, Antonio Najarro said he was inspired to try something entirely different for this new project. "I wanted to try a sophisticated and elegant project that would tell the tale of the night." Najarro said. Previous performances from the group experiment with a wide range of genres that mix traditional flamenco with different styles of music.
The first show performed by the group was called "Tango Flamenco" Ğ a marriage of flamenco, classical, Spanish dance and tango. The second performance "Flamenco Oriental" used music from different oriental cultures, and experiments with movements of precision that extend across different spaces. Najarro was motivated to mix jazz into his pieces as a means of modernizing the dance pieces and inspiring more passionate and innovative choreography. The 18-person cast’s performance of "Jazzing Flamenco" will take place in Turkey on May 22 at the İş Sanat Hall as the final act of the 2008-2009 season.
