VAL GARDENA - Werner Heel overcame gusting conditions to become the first Italian to win the Val Gardena World Cup Super-G on home snow on Friday.

Heel, winner of a downhill in Kvitfjell last season, skied a perfect race in one minute and 35.04 seconds and the 26-year-old could not be caught by the leading favorites as high winds swept the Saslong course. "To win at home is really the crowning of my career. Circumstances helped me but I think the choice of equipment was crucial too," Heel said.

Swiss Didier Defago was second, finishing 0.43 seconds behind Heel.

Bode Miller's early season struggles continued. The World Cup holder, winner of the same race two years ago, was 17th.

After Saturday's classic downhill on the Saslong, the men's circuit remains in Italy for a giant slalom and a slalom in Alta Badia.
