-- CITIZENS HAVE MONEY
The government made public a new package worth of 4 billion TL to encourage new investments, increase employment and extend loan support to small and medium sized enterprises. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said, "We increased the average salary of civil servants by 19.7 percent in 2008. Thus, citizens have money in their pockets." Erdogan noted that 81 provinces would be divided into four zones, investments in 12 sectors would be supported, 500,000 people would be employed, and 10 billion TL of resources would be created for small and medium sized enterprises with the new incentives system. Chemistry, petroleum, energy, automotive, communication, transportation, medical appliances and equipment, electronic, medicine, aviation, machinery and mining are the 12 sectors which were chosen to receive support within the scope of the new incentives package.

-- BOMBARDMENT ON PKK TERRORISTS
Security forces launch a wide sweeping operation, backed by air forces, to neutralize a group of PKK terrorists in the Bestler Dereler region of the southeastern province of Sirnak. One soldier, who stepped on a land mine planted by terrorists, was killed, and three others were injured during the operation. The injured soldiers were taken to Sirnak military hospital.

-- MOST AMBITIOUS PACKAGE
Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan made public the most comprehensive package in the history of the Republic of Turkey. Under the package, Turkey was divided into four groups as the most developed, developed, less developed and under-developed regions. Eastern and southeastern regions became the most advantageous regions for new projects and investments.

-- ERGENEKON IN GATA
Under the 13th wave of the Ergenekon probe, police detained 17 people in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir as part of an investigation into the ammunition found in Poyrazkoy. Three female civil servants, two from the Gulhane Military Medical Academy, or GATA, and one from the Air Forces Command, were among the detainees. Meanwhile, retired lecturer Professor Erol Manisali was released by court due to health problems. He underwent a surgery in Istanbul. Another detainee, Professor Fatih Hilmioglu, former rector of the Inonu University, was also hospitalized after suffering facial palsy.

-- COLONEL WAVE IN ERGENEKON CASE; 20 DETAINED
Sixteen of the 20 people detained in the 13th wave of Ergenekon operation are soldiers. It was claimed that the detained soldiers had ties to retired major Levent Pektas who was earlier arrested in Poyrazkoy operation. Meanwhile, Prof. Erol Manisali, who was in prison within the scope of the Ergenekon case, was discharged from prison after he underwent surgery.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan revealed a long-awaited incentives package to help the nation weather the global economic crisis. With "investment, employment, loan" precautions, the package aims to provide job for 500,000 people and financially support 12 sectors.

-- NO TAX FOR INVESTMENTS IN EASTERN TURKEY
Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan announced Turkey's new incentives system: Those who will invest in eastern Turkey will be exempt of social security premiums for seven years. The state will repay 5 percent of the loan interests. Some 500,000 people will be employed.

Rahsan Ecevit, widow of former prime minister, Bulent Ecevit, resigned from the Democratic Left Party, or DSP. Ecevit was the founder member of the DSP. Deputies Emrehan Halici and Mucahit Pehlivan also resigned from the party.

-- ARMY OFFICERS DETAINED
More than ten people including several military officers were detained under the Ergenekon probe upon directives of the Chief Prosecutor's Office in Istanbul. Police searched the homes of two officers with the Naval Forces Command. Three female civil servants, two from the Gulhane Military Medical Academy, or GATA, and one from the Air Forces Command, were among the detainees.

-- MANISALI UNDERGOES SURGERY
Professor Erol Manisali, a columnist with Cumhuriyet daily who was arrested under the Ergenekon probe, underwent surgery for cancerous lumps in his chest. The High Criminal Court on duty accepted a request by his lawyer and released him from prison. Meanwhile, Professor Fatih Hilmioglu, former rector of the Inonu University, was also hospitalized after suffering facial palsy while in prison.

Three women civil servants, who work in Gulhane Military Medical Academy in Ankara, were detained within the scope of Ergenekon probe. Police also searched the homes of a lawyer and two colonels.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan replied the call of Democratic Society Party, or DTP, leader Ahmet Turk to give up arms: "It is the terrorist organization which has to give up arms. Security forces never lay down arms."      Â

Rahsan Ecevit, founder chairwoman of Democratic Left Party, or DSP, resigned from her party saying, "There is no loyalty to the line of Ecevit." Deputies Emrehan Halici, Mucahit Pehlivan and Recai Birgun also resigned from the party following Ecevit's resignation.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan made public a new employment and incentives package worth $2 billion. The package aims to financially support small and medium sized enterprises and to decrease the differences between developed and developing regions.
