ANKARA - "Teknokent Days Ğ 2009," held by Ankara’s Hacettepe University, or HU, Teknokent A.Ş., kicked off yesterday. The theme of this year’s Teknokent Days is "University-Industry Collaboration and Technology Transfer."

The level of development and welfare of countries is determined according to the qualified labor force and competitiveness of their products, Ali Boğa, undersecretary at the Ministry of Industry and Trade, said at a ceremony held at the HU Culture Center. He said a country’s natural resources were enough in the past but now the capital and labor force were necessary in addition to such assets. "There are many countries that are rich in natural resources, but its people are poor."

Speaking on the foundation process of the Technology Development Center, Boğa said their goal was to become a country that could produce competitive technological information.

Boğa said Turkey was a developing country. "It is scientists who will help make Turkey a world-class performer and we believe we have the people to do it. This brainpower should be supported by industry, capital, advanced technology and science."

Interest from companies

HU Deputy Rector Professor Selçuk Geçim said 102 companies are working with HU Teknokent. He said the university was highly advanced, particularly in the field of life sciences, and therefore attracted interest from companies operating in the health sector.

The ceremony concluded with the announcement of winners of the HU Teknokent A.Ş. 2008 Project Competition. Awards were presented to projects in the categories of "Life Sciences and Technologies" and "Sciences and Engineering."

An agreement, titled "Representation Office," was signed also between Stuttgart-based Steinbeis Foundation, which has nearly 700 transfer centers in more than 40 countries, and HU Teknokent Technology Transfer A.Ş during the ceremony. The agreement aims to assist in the transfer of much needed technology from Germany and allow for the international sale of new technologies developed locally.
