--"DNA" REFORM FROM GOVERNMENT

The government decided to make DNA reform within the scope of adjustment to the European Union (EU). "DNA data and Turkish National DNA data bank Law" was included in the renewed national program and 2009 became the target. Under the 53-article law that was submitted to the prime ministry within the scope of harmonization with the EU, all biological information of Turkish citizens will be collected in DNA bank, encoded, and recorded. The information will be kept secret.

 

--GUITARIST FALLS AND DIES AT MOUNTAIN

Composer Tanju Duru, former guitarist of pop music group "Ezginin Gunlugu" died on Demirkazik Mountain of the central Anatolian province of Kayseri. Duru slipped and fell down a 150 meters cliff while descending from the mountain top.

--INSURERS NOT AFRAID OF ECONOMIC CRISIS

The global economic crisis hit the insurance sector on the heels of the banking sector. Most insurers in Turkey think that the global crisis would not affect them. However, Turkish insurers say, the global crisis would increase costs.

 

--WARM MESSAGES TO OPPOSITION

Turkish President Abdullah Gul approached the deputies of the Turkish main opposition with warm messages at the reception held in the Turkish parliament the other day. Gul talked with the deputies of the Republican People's Party (CHP) although these deputies did not applaud while Gul was entering the parliament. Being criticized by a senior official of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) for visiting Armenia, Gul said that "you will criticize and we will visit. This is how the world would witness our pluralist democracy."

--GALATASARAY CELEBRATES RAMADAN FEAST AT UEFA

Galatasaray soccer team of Turkey defeated Switzerland's AC Bellinzona 2-1 in Istanbul in UEFA Cup first round second leg match. Galatasaray had defeated AC Bellinzona 4-3 in Basel.

 

--RIOT IN MILITARY PRISON: TWO DEAD

Murat Comez and Mecit Akkaya, two soldiers under arrest, died and four others who were also under arrest were injured in a riot that erupted in military prison in Hasdal district of Istanbul on Monday night.

--CABINET TO BE SHUFFLED

Sources told that the Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan is making plans to shuffle his cabinet. At least 4-5 ministers are expected to be changed. Turkish Finance Minister Kemal Unakitan and Health Minister Recep Akdag are expected to leave their seats to new ministers.

--PKK TERRORIST ARRESTED

A terrorist of PKK organization, Aslan Y. (40), has been arrested while trying to enter Germany from Denmark. Aslan Y. is believed to have given orders for attacks on Turkish institutions in Europe. At least one person was killed on orders from Aslan Y.

--EXPERTS WARN

Turkish economic experts sent a warning to the government. According to most economists, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) is unaware of the economic crisis. "Turkey is about to enter a period of recession," told the economists.

 

--TURKEY'S CHIEF NEGOTIATOR FOR EU TALKS TO BE CHANGED

The Turkish government's attention in the new legislative year would be heavily turned to the European Union (EU). Sources claimed that Turkey will have a new chief negotiator for EU talks. Ali Babacan is the current chief negotiator and is at the same time the foreign minister. The deputy chairman in charge of foreign policy at the Justice and Development Party (AKP), Egemen Bagis, may become the new chief negotiator for EU talks.

--ERDOGAN TO GO ON CENTRAL ASIAN TOUR

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan will go on a tour to Central Asian countries on Friday covering Turkmenistan and Mongolia. Erdogan will pay a visit to Turkmenistan on Oct. 3-4, 2008 upon an invitation from Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow and visit Mongolia on Oct. 4-6, 2008 upon an invitation from Mongolian Prime Minister Sanjaa Bayar.

 

--SAD DAY OF MUSIC

Musician and mountaineer Tanju Duru died at Demirkazik Mountain of central Anatolian province of Kayseri. Duru, who earlier worked with Turkish pop music group "Ezginin Gunlugu", also had an individual album.

--STATE TO FLY NON-STOP

A private jet, ordered for the prime ministry and the presidency, is able to fly from Ankara to Los Angeles without stopping to refuel. The 30 meters jet has the capacity to carry 18 people. The G550 is able to fly at an altitude of 15,500 meters. After the delivery of the G550s in March, there will not be any need to rent planes from the private sector. The private jet is able to fly non-stop for 12,500 kilometers.

 

--SAD PAGE IN EZGININ GUNLUGU

Renowned guitarist and his five friends climbed on Demirkazik Mountain in Central Anatolian province of Kayseri four days ago. Duru slipped and fell while descending from the mountain top after staying there for four days. Rescue teams climbed down to the cliff but were only able to recover the body of Duru.
