The fact that Emine Erdogan, the wife of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, attended a gala screening of the new Turkish film "Valley of the Wolves-Iraq," was the target of much criticism last week in US newspapers. A Washington Times opinion piece noted that the Turkish First Lady had even sat next to the film's star, Necati Sasmaz, at the opening of the film, which the newspaper characterized as being "anti-American."

The Times article also highlighted Emine Erdogan's comment, "I am proud of them all," in reference to the Turks in the film who come up against American force in Iraq. The article also notes that Turkish Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc called the film "realistic" after seeing it. The Times piece closes by asking whether the readers can imagine what the reaction would be if Laura Bush attended the gala opening of an openly anti-Turkish film.
