Sarkozy: If Turkey Were European

Nicolas Sarkozy who is set to be the next French President said that he wanted a special partnership, rather than membership should be given by EU to Turkey and “If Turkey were European, we would know that.” Speaking to the 2nd French Channel, Sarkozy said that he did not intend to isolate Turkey and he supported Chirac’s decision to launch membership talks with Turkey.However, he said that he favored special partnership for Turkey rather than membership. Austrian President Heinz Fischer said that all member countries should hold referenda about Turkey’s membership.�
