ISTANBUL - American band Paula West Quartet is to guest appear at the "Garanti Jazz Green" concert series from Jan. 14 to 16.

The quartet will take the stage at the Istanbul Jazz Center. The band’s soloist Paula West will be accompanied by pianist George Mesterhazy, bassist Kağan Yıldız and timpanist Cengiz Baysal.

Born into a Marine Corps family in San Diego, California, she was initially exposed to classical music. "My parents didn't have a lot of jazz records," recalled West. "My father liked to listen to classical music," she said.

West began listening to jazz singers such as Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughn while in college. She is known for her rich, powerful contralto voice and for her sensitive interpretations of an extraordinarily eclectic selection of songs ranging far beyond jazz standards.

Holder of Best Jazz Album Music Award
West has so far worked with names like Bobby Hutcherson, Bill Charlap, Frank Weiss, Mulgrew Miller, Peter Washington, Victor Lewis, Bruce Barth, and Regina Carter. Due to the success of her three albums "Temptation," "Restless," and "Come What May," she has won the Best Jazz Album Music Award. She performs predominately in clubs in San Francisco and New York, with occasional performances in Europe.
