U.S. Warned: Do Not Resort To Tricks In Cyprus!

The U.S. administration believes that Turkish Cypriot President Rauf Denktas constitutes the biggest obstacle in front of a solution in Cyprus and Turkey’s EU membership. Washington reportedly warned Ankara three times so as to prevent any kind of fraud in the December elections in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Meanwhile, the American diplomats took action – upon the order of U.S. State Secretary Colin Powell – to ensure that the opposition in TRNC would win a fair election.The U.S. administration reportedly gave the message to Ankara that Denktas should not constitute an obstacle for free and fair elections in TRNC. These messages were voiced during different meetings of Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul with Eric Edelman, U.S. Ambassador to Ankara, and Powell and during the visits of Thomas Weston, U.S.’ Special Envoy to Cyprus.Â
