Talat visits Ankara ahead of US trip

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Mehmet Ali Talat will visit Ankara on Tuesday ahead of his planned trip to the US. Talat accepted the invitation of U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to travel to New York on an official visit. The TRNC president is due to meet with Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul on Tuesday and will leave for New York on Wednesday.

Asim Akansoy, the special secretary of TRNC Presidency said that Talat would have a busy schedule during his visit to the United States, reported the Anatolian news agency. "Talat will have meetings with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and UNDP Administrator Kemal Dervis. He will also attend some conferences organized by various think-tanks," said Akansoy.

TRNC President Talat is scheduled to with meet Condoleezza Rice on October 28, and will hold a press conference later that day. Talat will also come together with former U.S. Special Coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Weston, the same day.

Sources said that due to his visit to the U.S., Talat will not be able to meet British Deputy Prime Minister & First Secretary of State John Prescott, who is currently in Cyprus.
