The already once vetoed, controversial 'student amnesty bill', got its come back yesterday as it passed parliament with the three-fifths majority needed, 349 out of 550 were in favor of the bill. The bill, which offers amnesty to students who have been expelled since 2000, some for wearing the headscarf, will pardon at least 240,000 students.

The bill was drawn up by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and is seen by some as a "populist" movement.

Headscarfs are still banned in the civil service, schools and universities, in line with Turkey's strict secularism.
