ISTANBUL - The Search and Rescue Association, or AKUT, organized a controlled security operation at the Marmaray Project’s underwater railway construction site.

Following pre-scripted instructions for the safety test, a controlled explosion occurred and fire broke out at the construction area near Yenikapı station. As soon as the alarm siren rang, emergency officials evacuated the construction workers from the area.

After they fought the fire, an unconscious worker was carried to safety by rescuers. During the operation, another injured worker who was driving a winch at the construction area was rescued.

The rescuers climbed onto the winch, tied the injured man onto a stretcher, and removed him from the danger zone with their heroic moves.

Bülent Çakar, quality director of Gama-Nurol Holding, which manages the construction of the Marmaray Project, said such security operations are needed to know how to handle real emergency situations. "To counter concerns we need to organize these kinds of security operations during the construction and after it," said Çakar.

Trained employees
Following employees being trained for three days by AKUT in managing emergency situations four months ago, the first security operation was conducted in the Üsküdar district in August. Noting that their aim is to give employees the insight and ability to handle emergency situations, Çakar said the operation in Yenikapı was quite successful.

Dündar Şahin, chief of AKUT’s Educational and Consultancy Commission, said the training and the operation was important, noting that it was a successful operation and that its purpose was also to check if the managers of emergency situations are effective enough to control their teams.

The Marmaray Project encompasses approximately 76 kilometers of commuter rail from Istanbul’s Halkalı to Gebze and includes underwater tunnels that will connect the Asian and European sides of Istanbul.
