LA MOLINA - Germany's Maria Riesch won the women's World Cup slalom yesterday finishing ahead of American Lindsey Vonn and Kathrin Zettel of Austria. Riesch, one of the challengers this season to Vonn's overall World Cup crown, clocked a time of 1min 52.98sec for the two runs to leave Vonn in second by 1.48. Zettel was at 2.36 adrift.

The 24-year-old has been considered a huge talent since making her debut, only for serious injuries to hamper Riesch's progress on the circuit in the past two years.

This season Riesch has come third twice: at the slalom in Finland and in the downhill in Canada. But Riesch played down ideas of her winning the overall World Cup title.

"As regarding my winning the overall title? It is hard to win on all fronts, because Lindsey is good in all of them," she said. "And when I win a race, Lindsey is second. It will be difficult. With Lindsey, we are rivals on the course but we are good friends off it."

Vonn, who went out of the giant slalom on the first leg, did not discount Riesch's chances of depriving her of the overall title.

"I am really happy for Maria, who has returned to her real level," said the American. "And I think that she will be a red hot adversary this season for the overall title."
