ISTANBUL - The theme for this years 11th International Meeting of Cinema and History in Istanbul is "Refugees through history," announced the Turkish Foundation of Cinema and Audiovisual Culture, or TÜRSAK Ğ chief organizers of this year’s event Ğ this week.

The festival, which showcases documents of history through cinema, will be screening films this year that illustrate the lives and suffering of refugees today and throughout history.

"The subject of refugees is one that has caught the attention of film directors and producers for years, and we have therefore put together a selection of the top films that deal with this subject for this year’s festival," said Engin Yiğitgil, the director of TÜRSAK, speaking at a press conference in Istanbul this week.

Also speaking at the conference, Michel Gaude, Turkey’s representative at the U.N. high commissioner’s office for Refugees, said in today’s world, where there are 11.4 million refugees, we needed to protect and take responsibility for refugees. He recalled how influential directors, such as Charlie Chaplin, Andrei Tarkovsky and Roman Polanski were refugees too.

The festival runs from Dec. 19-25 at the Cinebonus Maçka G-Mall and Alkazar movie theaters and at the French Cultural Institute’s movie theater. Tickets will be on sale at YTL 2 this year, and viewings at the French Cultural Institute will be free.
